Ellen has served on the Fundraising Advisory Council of Lifebox, 2014-2018, a nonprofit led by Atul Gawande, M.D., MPH, a surgeon, writer, and public health leader. He is CEO of the non-profit-seeking health care venture formed by Amazon, Berkshire Hathaway, and JPMorgan Chase to deliver better outcomes, satisfaction, and cost efficiency in care. He is an endocrine surgeon at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, a New Yorker writer, and author of Being Mortal, The Checklist Manifesto, and Complications. Lifebox works to improve the safety of healthcare in low-resource countries. They support healthcare facilities and professionals to access the essential equipment, relevant training, and best practice guidelines and tools that will ensure that the care they deliver is as safe and appropriate as possible. Their initial area of focus is on surgery and anesthesia—a key part of global public health, which receives very little international attention. Their initial focus has been on distributing pulse oximeters free or at low cost.
